Award-winning 'Patriot's Pen' essay

Why I honor the American flag. I honor the American Flag because it stands for us, it stands for our freedom. On November 11 every year on Veterans Day my home town of Dunlap, Tennessee gets together and we honor the veterans, the American Flag. As Adrian Cronauer once said, “The American Flag represents all of us and all the values we hold sacred.” The American Flag has many different names like Old Glory, Star Spangled Banner and Stars and Stripes. The American Flag is a symbol of the nation’s pride and values.

One thing Oliver Wendell Holmes once said was “One flag, one land, one heart, one hand, one nation, EVERMORE!” I think that shows our freedom and we need to appreciate that freedom because some places don’t have as much freedom as we have and some places, they don’t even have freedom. The American Flag is important it stands for the men and women who die each year just so we can have freedom; can we just take 30 seconds to appreciate those men and women that go to war, go to fight just for us.

I honor the American Flag because it has been around for years and years and years and many people take advantage of it but I don’t. I think people need to respect it more and the reason why I honor the American Flag is because it stands for freedom, responsibility, and people who died for us and continue to do it right now right as I am speaking to you. The American Flag has many, many honors in life that people have made just to keep the Flag from touching the ground.

Have respect for the American Flag because maybe your Grandfather, your dad, your great grandfather, maybe they fought for that flag.
