Dunlap police make arrest in tire theft from Potts Towing Service

Sept. 10, 2018 – The Dunlap Police Department made an arrest last week in a theft of wheels reported Thursday, Sept. 6.

Officers arrested Bradley Keith Smith, 20, of Dunlap, after surveillance video from Potts Towing Service captured him on film at the business on Old York Highway East, jacking up a 2009 Pontiac and removing the tires complete with wheels.

According to Dunlap Police Chief Clint Huth, police were dispatched to Potts Towing at about 7 a.m. Thursday on a report of a theft.

Four tires and wheels were taken off the car,” Huth said Friday. “It was jacked up and the tires removed off it.”

The video evidence indicated the theft took place after midnight in the early morning hours Thursday. Officers recognized the individual in the video and his vehicle.

On Thursday afternoon, about 4:30, officers located Smith and interviewed him. During the interview, he confessed to stealing the tires, Huth said. Smith then took police to a wooded area in Dunlap and showed them where the tires were hidden.

Smith was arrested and booked into the Sequatchie County Jail on the charge of theft over $1,000. Bond was set at $2,500, and his initial court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 9 in Dunlap Municipal Court.
