In accord with state law, schools now display national motto

Aug. 9, 2018 – The words “In God we trust” are now prominently displayed in every Sequatchie County school, including the Alternative School, and the school system's central office on Cordell Drive.

Last year, the Tennessee legislature passed a law requiring the display of the United States national motto, “In God we trust,” in every public school.

So starting with this school year, all the public schools are displaying the motto.

The state left it up to the individual school systems to portray the motto in whatever form they chose, and the Sequatchie County School system decided on a simple metal plaque engraved with the words of the motto, and the reference under those words to the Tennessee code requiring the sign.

According to Director of Schools Pete Swafford, the plaques were installed in all the schools about a week before the start of the 2018-19 school year.
