May 14, 2018 – Two preschool children reportedly accessed and shot off their mother's handgun in the yard Friday morning as their mother slept.  No injuries were reported.

According to a spokesman for the Sequatchie County Sheriff's Department, a neighbor called 911 to report “unsupervised kids in the yard” at a home on Rock Creek Road at about 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 11.

When deputies arrived at the home, the mother had already returned the .38 special to the glove box of her car, but the incident reportedly developed in this way:

The mother, who works a night shift, lay down to take a nap with her two boys, 5 and 2 years old. After she fell asleep, the boys got up, took her keys and went outside.

They unlocked the car and were playing inside the car while their mother was asleep,” Detective Jason Harvey said Monday. “They found a fully loaded pistol in the glove box, and took it out of the car. They fired a shot into the ground, and then fired another shot into the ground.”

The boys then reportedly ran in the house and gave their mom the gun. It was locked in the car when officers arrived, Harvey said.

He said no charges had resulted from the incident “at this time,” but the Department of Children Services is investigating.
